The Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) recognized the country’s modern day heroes in the 2016 Search for Outstanding Volunteers (SOV) awarding ceremony on 13 December 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Ortigas Center, Quezon City.

PNVSCA received eighty one (81) nominations and conferred the awards to eighteen (18) outstanding volunteers and volunteer service organizations.

The Palawan Geographic Society (PGS) from the MIMAROPA region, was hailed as one of the regional awardees in the non-profit organization category.

PGS is a very active group in environmental protection through its numerous productive activities driven mostly by the members’spirit for volunteerism despite having nominal funds. Among its ongoing projects and activities are: peoject kalusugan para sa katutubo natin (KAPAKANAN); oplan linis daungan; operation divers against crown-of-thorns (DACOT); annual geographic bee, conducted by PGS among high school students of Palawan to increase their knowledge and consciousness about Palawan geography and ecology, and other subjects of local, national and international environmental concerns; snake island seascape conservation; whale shark research and conservation; and participation in various inter-agency activities.
