As part of the 2022 National Heritage Month bearing the theme “Pamanang Lokal: Binhi ng Kulturang Pilipino,” the MIMAROPA Special Committee on Culture (SCC) conducted a webinar focusing on the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage on May 30 through  Zoom video conference.

MIMAROPA Regional Development Council Chairperson and Romblon Governor Jose R. Riano, in his opening remarks, stressed the significance of preserving and appreciating cultural heritage. He encouraged the participants to reflect on the importance of celebrating the National Heritage Month. He also hoped that the activity enkindles the passion and interest of the participants in culture and the arts to ensure that the cultural legacy of past generations will be continuously preserved and promoted.

Dr. Felipe M. de Leon, Jr., former chairperson of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and former commissioner of the UNESCO Philippines, discussed key ideas of Filipino culture and the seven facets of cultural worth which include originality, indigenousness, authenticity, uniqueness, historicity, magnitude, and excellence. He emphasized that the seven facets of cultural worth and categories of tourist attractions can be better appreciated if there was a realization in the usefulness in identifying the most noteworthy attractions not only of Filipino culture in general but of the phenomenal diversity of the subcultures.

Meanwhile, NCCA Executive Director Oscar G. Casaysay, in his closing remarks, urged everyone to maintain and promote local heritage within the community, emphasizing its importance in establishing cultural identity.

“I encourage everyone to work together to develop our culture and customs, which define our Filipino identity. Let us value, protect, and disseminate our cultural legacy together,” Casaysay added.

The webinar was participated in by heads and representatives from regional line agencies, local government units, and state universities and colleges.
