Sustaining its mandate to provide technical assistance in the conduct of small scale mining within the MIMAROPA region, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) MIMAROPA Regional Office successfully staged the 6th Regional Small Scale Mining Summit on October 19, 2016 at the Bayview Park Hotel, Manila.

Serving as an assembly for exchange and updating of information, the activity provided presentations on Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order No. 2015-03 or the revised implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act 7076 (People’s Small Scale Mining Act of 1991); review of CY 2014-2015 Provincial/City Mining Regulatory Board accomplishments and 2016 accomplishments; and report on the status of submission of reportorial requirements.

To facilitate discussions on issues and concerns arising from the presentations, ample time was dedicated for open forum to address relevant queries with recommendations from the regional office.

Among the highlights of the event is the keynote speech delivered by DENR Undersecretary and Concurrent MGB Director Mario Luis Jacinto who emphasized the role of the MGB and the P/CMRBs in effectively regulating small scale mining and other related activities. He also imparted his personal experiences on small scale mining, particularly mentioning the common problems he encountered. On account of these, he underscored the importance of the optimization of the natural resources, and the goal of achieving sustainable development in the industry.

In his closing remarks, MGB MIMAROPA Regional Director Roland De Jesus accentuated the essential contributions of both the small and large scale mining. He enthused P/CMRBs to continue working on their functions and accomplish well as their valuable share in eventually achieving sustainable development in the mining industry. Also gracing the successful activity is MGB CALABARZON Regional Director Samuel Paragas.

Culminating the event is the awarding ceremony for the best P/CMRB garnered by PMRB-Palawan on account of their remarkable accomplishments.

The Regional Small Scale Mining Summit is being held annually in aid of effectual discharge of the important functions of the P/CMRBs of the provinces of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan and Puerto Princesa City.
